Useful resources to aid in your family tree research
Family Search (familysearch.org) – Free census search, variety of free records including marriage and death. You don’t need to have an account with them, but helpful if you do, in order to view some record originals.
Ancestry.com – The king of genealogy websites. Paid subscription required. Access to many family trees and assorted records.
Rootsweb (rootsweb.com) – Free access to uploaded family trees.
FindAGrave – Free cemetery search. Often has photos of grave markers and sometimes has historical bios.
Cousin Calculator – Calculate cousin relationships. Also has definitions to cousin terms and what “removed” means.
Google Books – Collection of historical books available to view online. Search for your county of choice or ancestor’s name.
Free Newspaper Search – Google has some old newspapers available to search for free.
Newspapers.com – Subscription needed; has some historical newspapers.
Civil War Soldier Search – Website by the National Park Service. Search for relatives in the Civil War for free.
Fold3 – Subscription needed; has access to many military records.
Don’t forget about Google! A google search of your relative and their location and/or birth year may turn up some family genealogy websites or more information.
